Update from Mrs. Dalmut – Jan 22: Catholic Schools Week, Manners Program, Open House

Dear Parents,

Thursday was another good day for St. Ambrose. First of all, we started on time — a relief after the threats of bad weather! Our choir sounded beautiful at Mass. Our 8th grade class attended a special presentation, and then the March for Life.  Finally, I had the privilege of joining the Battle of the Books group for a discussion of The Odyssey. What talented students we have!

Catholic Schools Week is here, and the weekend will be a busy one! Our 7th and 8th graders are hosting a dance for their counterparts at Nativity, St. Bernadette, and Holy Spirit Schools.  Saturday night the Knights of Columbus are sponsoring a Spaghetti Supper at 6:00. The PTO presents the comedy troupe FOOLS! at 7:30. (See The Buzz for more details). Finally, our Open House will be held Sunday. I will have a Meet the Principal from 8:45 – 9:45am. Our Open House will be from 11:00am – 1:30pm. Please tell your friends to come see our school. We will have tours and an opportunity to register for the 2015-16 school year.  We already have a waiting list for one class!

We have some festivities planned for Catholic Schools Week:

Monday — students may bring in a poster  with the CSW theme (Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge, and Service). Posters must be neat and grammatically correct to earn a dress-down pass.

Tuesday — Student Appreciation Day — Students may dress-down, will have no homework, and will be treated to a movie appropriate to the week. The school will come together at 2:30 for a Living Rosary. Please join us to pray for Catholic schools around the world.

Wednesday — Teacher Appreciation Day — 11:30 Dismissal — 8th grade parents will treat the teachers to a luncheon (thank you!) Please send in a note or some remembrance to your children’s teachers. We have an amazing teaching team and office staff at St. Ambrose. This is a great time to let them know how much you appreciate them. I still have cards from my classes — all the way back to 2000!

Thursday — 9:00 Mass; Spelling Bee at 10:00.

Friday — Father Fisher will speak to the entire school about the Blessed Mother and Lourdes. All are welcome to join us at 10:15.  Parents will speak to classes about their careers in the STEM areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math from 1:45-2:45. We have made solid progress in our emphasis on the STEM subjects. Thank you to all who are supporting our mission!

Our Manners program is in full swing. Here are our first four lessons:

1. Speak to adults with respect. (We are enjoying the greetings in the morning. We hope that we are building good habits of looking people in the eye and greeting them by name.)

2. Make eye contact when someone is speaking with you.

3. Encourage one another  — Think of positive things to say to your classmates and teachers. If someone in your class does something well, or wins a game, congratulate them.

4. Respect other students’ comments, opinions, and ideas. (Friday’s lesson)

Thank you for supporting us by helping your children practice at home!

God bless,

Barbara Dalmut
